How to Survive Survivor?

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Survivor, launching on GMA 7 this August, is the latest reality TV franchise to hit Philippines screens, after Pinoy Idol.Sixteen castaways are stranded on a remote island and must battle it out for approximately 40 days to win the biggest, grandest prize ever on Philippine TV (according to GMA).

What happens on the program (based on the international show)?

The 16 castaways are divided into two groups, or tribes, (could it be like, the Mangyan tribe and the Tausug tribe?) as soon as they arrive on the island.During each program the two tribes compete with each other to fulfil a challenge - the Immunity challenge. The tribe which loses the challenge must then vote off a member - during a Tribal Council - who is then forced to leave the island immediately.

Paolo, to Host Survivor. Confirmed.

True to the result of our week-long poll, Paolo Bediones, who got 113 (43.1%) votes, got the hosting job. The GMA News and Public Affairs team is scheduled to officially announce this to the public. Many believe that his experience and long stint as host of the now defunct reality show, Extra Challenge, helped him win the hosting role.

One episode that will be best remembered that resembles some twists, strategies and challenges from the Survivor Show was "Extra Challenge Milyonaryo: Ang Kasabwat." It is the first month-long challenge for the show which exiles 10 showbiz personalities to an island somewhere in Zambales. The 10 were Polo Ravales, Nikki Valdez, Gwen Garci, Jean Garcia, Andrew Wolff, GRO model Kenji Mabasa, beauty titlist Wendy Valdez, models Ruru Friedhof, and Mariko Davis, and Marvin Agustin who emerged as the big winner of 1M pesos.

Survivor Filming in Bicol

What's the buzz in this remote, fourth-class municipality? Rumors of Hollywood stars being filmed on the peninsula's beaches of powdery white sand are told by word of mouth and in entertainment teasers, blind items, blogs and online discussion boards.

"It's 'Survivor,'" the locals say quickly, even if many of them might not have seen a single episode of this famous reality game show.

"Survivor," which isolates its contestants in the wilderness to compete for cash and prizes, and is known to choose exotic environments as its location, has been taping its French version's next season here for 28 days now.

Do you want to be the First Pinoy Sole Survivor?

"Survivor Philippines,"GMA is in search of contestants from 18 to 60 years old, physically fit and willing to become castaways and endure intense physical and mental challenges in an unfamiliar territory for 39 days to compete for the title of being the first Filipino survivor.

If you think you got what it takes to be one of the 16 castaways for SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES, go to any of the nationwide auditions in key cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

GMA-7 has "Survivor," ABS-CBN has "Fear Factor"

Survivor, not an 'artista' search

Paolo has started promoting Survivor Philippines on TV, and his first was on Eat Bulaga last Saturday, April 26. From the host's mouth himself, he stresses that this is not an 'artista' search, "That's why we have Startruck and Pinoy Idol for talent search," he added in Tagalog. He emphasizes that a castaway wannabe need not to sing, act or dance to be qualified. Castaway hopefuls who fall on the right age bracket requirement (18 - 60 years old), must be physically fit and mentally capable to live 39 days in a remote island.

Paolo Bediones Lands Survivor

Thursday, April 24, 2008

All that Paolo Bediones is asking is to have Internet connection on the remote island where the Philippine version of the US reality show “Survivor” will most probably be shot. Explains Bediones, who landed the coveted “Survivor” hosting gig on GMA 7: “I need e-mail, to keep in touch with my business partners in Manila (for such ventures as a dental clinic and a production house). If we can’t bring cell phones, a satellite phone would do. ”

Apart from those two urban luxuries, Bediones is ready to rough it.

“For 39 days, the staff and I will be living in conditions similar to those of the 16 castaways,” he notes.

He says he’s willing to make the same sacrifices as the contestants. “Some of them will need to quit or take a leave from their jobs. They won’t see their family for over a month.”

Same with Bediones who also has to give up several jobs. “My other show, ‘Tok! Tok! Tok! Isang Milyon, Pasok,’ will go on a break next month and resume airing in August,” he says.

Before embarking on the trip, Bediones and the 100-man crew will undergo survival training, as well as rigorous medical and physical examinations.

The contestants will also take the same battery of tests, says Bediones. “A psychologist will be on board to assess the castoffs. We want to make sure that they’ll be able to cope with the show’s physical and mental demands. We don’t want to cast a potential serial killer and literally turn the show into a game of survival.”

Criteria for host

Number one criterion for the host, says program manager Neil B. Gumban, is “physical fitness.” Since Bediones anchored the GMA 7 reality contest “Extra Challenge” for two and a half years, Gumban says the former model is “perfect” as host of the “world’s most unique social experiment.”

“‘Extra Challenge’ gave me the foundation, in terms of building credibility,” recalls Bediones. “On that show, I would often do the same stunts required of our celebrity-contestants—like rappelling down the GMA 7 building.”

Another requirement is the willingness to pore over the 169-page production bible of the world-famous franchise. “It was a chance to learn from a show that has become a worldwide success,” Bediones says. “It’s exciting to find out how they did it.”

He admits he’s a “big fan” of the US series hosted by Jeff Probst. “I’ve seen most of the episodes,” he relates.

He has no specific dream destination for “RP Survivor.” He points out, “Since we’re just starting, perhaps we should set it in familiar territory. It would be great to work in a tropical location with a beach where the contestants can perform the different challenges.”

At press time, GMA 7 has yet to decide whether to set it locally or abroad (which is the tradition).

Possibilities

According to executive producer Donna Medina, other international editions of “Survivor” have been shot in the Philippines. “Twice in El Nido, Palawan, and we heard ‘Survivor France’ was recently shot in Camarines Sur.”

The Philippines, says Medina, is the second Oriental “Survivor” after Japan. (Although there were also versions in Pakistan, Israel and the Middle East.)

Bediones asserts: “Perhaps in future editions, we can go to Africa and Australia. Or even Antarctica and turn it into a game of how many toes you can keep by the end of the show.”

Paolo Bediones is the host

The last time na-interview ng PEP si Paolo, wala pa siyang matukoy na bago niyang show after Tok, Tok, Tok!.
